Christmas at Sun Peaks!

by Sarah26. December 2012 10:45

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful day with your family and loved ones.

Well Santa definitely came to Sun Peaks this year! Not only did he ski, skate and dine with us over the past couple of weeks but he also gave us all the gift of snow - we've received 180cm in December so far! It was great to see so many of you out there yesterday enjoying the great conditions and celebrating Christmas day on the mountain!

As 2012 draws to an end, make sure you join us for our famous New Year’s Eve Celebrations! There are loads of activities planned including live music, parades and fireworks to help you kick off 2013 in style!

Happy holidays!

Moonlight Snowshoe and S'mores Tour!

by Sarah22. December 2012 17:52

Sun Peaks offers so much more than just fantastic skiing and snowboarding and so I’ve decided that this season I want to experience as many winter activities as possible - first on the hit list, a snowshoeing tour!

There’s a variety of different tours available but I opted for the Moonlight Snowshoe and S’mores Tour, partly because I wanted to explore the mountains at night but also because I was tempted to try a  s’more which I’ve heard so much about!

After meeting our very friendly tour guide Rob and getting fitted with our snowshoes we set off in the direction of Mount Morrisey. It was a great night to take the tour,  we’d had 18cm of fresh snow in the past 24 hours and the sky was so clear we could spot Orion’s Belt and The Big Dipper. We began our journey on a groomed Nordic trail but even when we ventured off track I was surprised by how easy it was to walk in thigh deep powder!

Upon arrival at the camp we were warmed up by a campfire and bottomless hot apple cider! While we toasted our marshmallows and enjoyed the yummy s’mores, Rob read us ‘The Cremation of Sam McGee’ by Robert W Service and told us a little about the history of snowshoeing.  There was a real sense of being completely on our own on the mountain and it was a magical experience!

The descent back to the village was the highlight for me, not only did we get an incredible view of the glistening village below but we could see the snow cats working their magic across the front slopes of Sundance.

Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the mountains and see them in a completely different way! Next time I’m going to join the Alpine tour for a daylight expedition on Mount Tod! For more information on snowshoeing rental and the different tours available click here.

Santa comes to Sun Peaks!

by Sarah19. December 2012 17:01

Despite the dumping snow, Santa managed to find his way to our village on Saturday for his annual alpine visit and for the first of his many appearances at Sun Peaks this year!

As well as getting their photo taken with Santa, visitors were able to sample food at local restaurants, meet some of the Huskies from Mountain Man Adventure Dogsledding tours and shop at the various market stalls that were set up especially for the day! Kids were also treated to a number of activities such as ornament decorating, snowman making and Christmas storytelling. With plenty of snow falling and everyone’s favourite Christmas carols playing the village really came to life and turned into a magical winter wonderland. It was definitely a fabulous way to end what was an awesome day on the slopes!

If you missed Santa's visit, dont worry there's still plenty of opportunities to meet him, have your photo taken or get your Christmas wish list in! This Saturday, December 22nd head to the ice rink to skate with Santa or on Sunday hit the slopes and ski with Santa as he cruises down 5 Mile! Alternatively, share a pancake breakfast with the man himself at Masa's Bar + Grill on Monday the 24th before he sets of on his annual expedition!

Happy holidays everyone and enjoy the festive fun!

Resurgence Rail Jam!

by Sarah13. December 2012 09:43

The 3rd Annual Resurgence Rail Jam presented by B&B Board Shop took place on Sunday December 9 in our green terrain park zone, stepped up a bit just for the jam. Dumping snow may have led many spectators to hit the slopes but it certainly didn't deter the record breaking number of participants who were eager to battle it out!

For those of you that missed the action, entrants competed in 30 minute jam sessions with a finals round for the Mens Open categories. Points were awarded based on their rankings at this event, which will be combined with points at our other park events this season to decide the No Bail Peace Prize winners for this winter.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and showing your support to the riders. It's fair to say that the Resurgence Rail Jam was not only an awesome start to the 2012/2013 terrain park series but also a great showcase of local park talent!

See you all on December 31st in the Rockstar Energy Terrain Park for the Granville Island First Flight Big Air Invitationalpart of our famous New Year's Eve Celebrations!

At the end of the day.....

by Sarah28. November 2012 10:48

After a solid day skiing (well, at least for my 2nd day back on the slopes!) and a few epic stacks including one where I managed to fly what felt like 10 metres down the mountain, lose both my skis and pull a knee muscle in the process, I decided to spend the evening getting a bit of R & R at the Sports and Aquatic Centre!

There’s no denying that when you’re feeling a bit bruised and battered or just exhausted after a big day carving it up then nothing beats a relaxing soak in a hot tub. The Sports and Aquatic center has a hot tub and a heated outdoor pool which are perfect for thawing out, relaxing and in my case relieving aches and pains! The center is also home to the Mascon Hangout where teens can play video games on the Xbox or Wii, watch the latest ski and snowboard movies or just escape from their parents! It really is post-slopes enjoyment for everyone!

Opening weekend!

by Sarah21. November 2012 19:15

Well despite the less then favorable conditions over the weekend it was great to see many of you out there enjoying the first runs of the season. And it’s even greater to see that the snow is now really starting to fall!

I hit the slopes for the first time this winter yesterday, and had a blast being taken back to my beginner days on the greens but also going off trail and discovering some fresh pockets of powder, thanks to all the snow that’s recently fallen. It definitely did the trick and has got me very excited for what’s to come!

I’ve been here a little over a week now and I’ve spent some time getting acquainted with the village and meeting some of the very friendly locals. I’ve also hit the shops for items to get me ready for the season ahead– on top of a few necessities I managed to convince myself that an additional pair of goggles, mittens and another new beanie (or should I say, toque!) were not ‘wants’ but ‘needs’. This was also the case for the delicious chocolate, caramel, nut creation that I found at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory - yum!

Well, one thing that is undeniably a ‘need’ are some ski’s so I’m off to demo some now (it’s down to the Volkl Kenja or the Rossignol Temptation 82, I’ll let you know how I get on).

Until next time - enjoy your time out on the slopes and make sure you ski and ride with care!

Here’s to the start of the 2012-2013 winter season!

by Sarah15. November 2012 22:39

Hey everyone, my name is Sarah and I’ll be your blogger for the season. Although originally from Australia I’ve spent the last few years in London where one indoor ski slope (150 metres long!) was the best and possibly only option for skiing or riding. So it’s definitely an understatement to say that I’m a little excited to be spending this winter living and working at a world-class ski resort!

I’m really looking forward to keeping you all informed about what’s been happening at Sun Peaks Resort as well as sharing my own experiences with you over the coming months. If you’re wondering how to spend your time when you’re not on the slopes then be sure to check out our Events Calendar – there’s always something going on for everyone.

Apart from the obvious there are lots of other things to do this opening weekend! On Saturday night the annual Fire Fighters Fundraising Gala will take place at The Delta Hotel and there’s also the premiere of LSL Production’s newest ski and snowboard film at Masa’s Bar + Grill.

Enjoy your first day on the slopes - I look forward to seeing you all out there. And don’t forget to keep praying to Mother Nature!

Here's a picture we took on the mountain this morning!

by Administrator15. October 2012 19:00

If you see this post it means that BlogEngine.NET 2.7 is running and the hard part of creating your own blog is done. There is only a few things left to do.

Write Permissions

To be able to log in to the blog and writing posts, you need to enable write permissions on the App_Data folder. If your blog is hosted at a hosting provider, you can either log into your account’s admin page or call the support. You need write permissions on the App_Data folder because all posts, comments, and blog attachments are saved as XML files and placed in the App_Data folder.

If you wish to use a database to to store your blog data, we still encourage you to enable this write access for an images you may wish to store for your blog posts.  If you are interested in using Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, SQL CE, or other databases, please see the BlogEngine wiki to get started.

Security

When you've got write permissions to the App_Data folder, you need to change the username and password. Find the sign-in link located either at the bottom or top of the page depending on your current theme and click it. Now enter "admin" in both the username and password fields and click the button. You will now see an admin menu appear. It has a link to the "Users" admin page. From there you can change the username and password.  Passwords are hashed by default so if you lose your password, please see the BlogEngine wiki for information on recovery.

Configuration and Profile

Now that you have your blog secured, take a look through the settings and give your new blog a title.  BlogEngine.NET 2.7 is set up to take full advantage of of many semantic formats and technologies such as FOAF, SIOC and APML. It means that the content stored in your BlogEngine.NET installation will be fully portable and auto-discoverable.  Be sure to fill in your author profile to take better advantage of this.

Themes, Widgets & Extensions

One last thing to consider is customizing the look of your blog.  We have a few themes available right out of the box including two fully setup to use our new widget framework.  The widget framework allows drop and drag placement on your side bar as well as editing and configuration right in the widget while you are logged in.  Extensions allow you to extend and customize the behaivor of your blog.  Be sure to check the BlogEngine.NET Gallery at dnbegallery.org as the go-to location for downloading widgets, themes and extensions.
