Sun Peaks Resort is located on what was formerly known as the Mount Tod Ski Area in the McGillivray Creek Valley, approximately 360 kilometres north of Vancouver, British Columbia.
In April 1992, Tod Mountain was purchased by Nippon Cable Co. Ltd., of Tokyo, Japan, transforming the ski area (renamed Sun Peaks Resort) into a modern, four-season mountain community.

Ecosign, in conjunction with architect Mory Bergmeyer, developed the Sun Peaks Master Plan and designed the "look" of the resort, which reflects traditional alpine villages of Central Europe. The village’s architecture incorporates gabled rooflines, colourful facades, a variety of intriguing window treatments, and ornate signage. Covered pedestrian walkways known as "arcades" are also incorporated into one or two sides of all the village buildings. Decks and balconies provide useable outdoor space, and add interest to the buildings when viewed from the village street. Parking garages at Sun Peaks Resort are conveniently located underground, to preserve the pedestrian character of the village.
Phase 2 developments at Sun Peaks will see the construction of new lifts and terrain on one more mountain bringing the ski area to a total of four mountains, in addition to a recreation centre, a second village area including over 1,000 new dwelling units distributed amongst seven hotels, nine townhouse developments and 140 single family homes.
Since 1992, total investment in the Sun Peaks Resort is close to 500 million dollars, a very significant figure for the total building activity in the Thompson-Nicola Valley Regional District. The mountain resort continues to expand and now boasts a year round population of 500 residents and over 7,000 tourist beds.
