Sun Peaks, BC (June 6, 2012) - Anticipation is building for Sun Peaks Summer Kick-Off Weekend (June 30 – July 1). As the first of 14 action packed weekends, the energy is higher than ever before.
The Sunburst Chairlift will begin turning on Friday, June 29, opening access to Sun Peaks famous downhill biking and alpine hiking trails. This season, several improvements have been made to the downhill biking trail system, including on Behind Bars and Steam Shovel trails.
New hiking trails have also been reclaimed from older existing trails, including Tod’s Backside, encircling Sun Peaks’ highest peak, Mt. Tod and The Gils Trail, which cuts across a popular backcountry ski area. These trails will offer new areas for families and hikers to explore while offering amazing vistas down the valley.
June 30 will bring many exciting family activities to the resort, including The 10th Annual Jo’s Road Race, a bouncy castle and climbing wall, clown performances, dog agility demonstration and fire truck display.
The village will also be rocking to the sounds of live music featuring The Blues Jumpers and Steel Wheels (a Rolling Stones tribute band) throughout the afternoon and evening.
The Mountain of Beer & Chili Cook-Off is also back by popular demand on June 30. Guests can enjoy the afternoon sampling signature beers from different breweries and local chefs’ house made chili. The 2012 People’s Choice Award will given to the chef garnering the most votes for his creation.
The Sun Peaks & Region Farmers’ Market will begin on July 1 and continue every Sunday to September 9 from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. In its seventh year at Sun Peaks, the market has become a staple for residents and guests wishing to create meals from local, sustainable food or pick up unique items from crafters and artists. Local vendors are able to showcase some of B.C.’s finest food and wares to guests from all over the world.
