Bike Park Update for July 3, 2009

With opening week under our belts, and a lot of great feedback (positive and constructive) coming our way, the crew is stoked to keep up a high quality of trails. Almost every trail saw some form of buffing this week.

Steam Shovel got worked over by the trail crew at the end of the day on Thursday. We smoothed out the brake bumps and fixed every take off. The take offs are now more consistent throughout the run, and suitable for the size of each jump. Next week we will give the Steam Shovel wall ride a huge face lift with the addition of some plywood to smooth out the riding surface, and make the feature stronger. The plywood will also allow for a much bigger dirt berm at the bottom of the wall, and create a better angle for those riders that stayed away from the feature before.

If you're looking to slay some intermediate trails this weekend Gummy Bear, Cahilty, and lower Mach opened up this week. The DH course still remains closed, due to the large mud bog at the base of the Elevation Chairlift. The crew will be working on this issue early next week putting in proper drainage.

Don’t just stick to the usual runs this weekend, because the entire park is in great shape. Sugar and Sweet One are still super tacky, and in great shape. Behind Bars is also worth riding. The crew did a ton of work on this trail prior to opening to remove some of the awkward pedaling sections. Behind Bars now has more flow, and some cool technical lines.

Don’t forget about the Yeah Bro! Biker Cross going on this Saturday, July 4. A ton of anodized prizing just rolled into the office today and it is sick! Don't miss out on the fun. For more information on the Yeah Bro! Biker Cross click here.

To get your stoke going for the weekend make sure you check out the pictures posted below from the video/photo shoot we had at the start of the season. The pictures were taken by legendary mountain bike photographer John Gibson. The video footage from the day should be released any day now, so stay locked to sunpeaksresort.com.

Bike Park Update for June 26, 2009

With only one day to go before we open on Saturday, June 27, things couldn’t be any better. All the trails that can be opened are buffed and ready to go. The resort has received a substantial amount of rain over the past few days, so every thing is tacky. I think this will make for a banger opening weekend and a solid trail base for the season.

The trail crew stayed busy this week adding new features to the bike park. Sugar received a brand new drop to a nice big dirt landing that will be here for years to come. This feature is located off a road intersection towards the top of the run. The new log feature in the Rocky Mountain Flow Zone was also finished, giving the pro line a whole new look. Many hours were also spent reshaping the jumps in the pro line so the whole Flow Zone is dialed and ready to go for Saturday.

We had a few guests riders come check out the trails this past Wednesday and they were extremely stoked on what they rode. One of our guests, Matt Hunter, said that the new re route on Barn Burner was so good he barely touched his brakes coming down. If you can’t make opening day, be sure to check back on sunpeaksresort.com next week to watch the first Bike Park webisode of the season featuring Matt Hunter, Graham Agassiz, Chayse Marshall, Dylan Sherrard, and Ian Killick.

Thanks for checking out the Sun Peaks Bike Park Update. Saturday is going to be SICK.

Bike Park Update for June 18, 2009

The crew sat down for beers at the end of the day today, and the subject came up on how good everyone was feeling. Forearms were looking ripped, and a few new belt notches were being bragged about. The crew was starting to wonder who has gained more over the past few weeks, the bike park or the trail crew. I would have to say that the bike park has definitely gained more after all the accomplishments this past week.

The week ended on a high note with the placement of a nice 20' log at the top of the pro line in the Rocky Flow Zone. This log jam will drop riders in with ease, so they can get ready to send it on the big hits.

The re-route on Barn Burner was also a huge success with the addition of seven more berms, and a lot more flow added to the trail. The last berm is over six feet tall. The berm is nice and steep, and it might feel more like a wall ride than a berm at that height. Check out the picture from the build.

At this point in time every trail in the bike park has received a substantial amount of work. With one week to go before opening day on Saturday, June 27, there will be enough time to do last minute maintenance, and add a few new features to the trails.

Bike Park Update for June 12, 2009

Opening day of the Sun Peaks Bike Park is fast approaching, and the confidence of the trail crew is riding high. The crew is certain that the trails they have been working on seven days a week for the last three weeks, will bring smiles and high fives to every one who shows up for opening day on Saturday, June 27.  The to do list and the wet mucky sections are getting smaller every day, and with just enough rain in the forecast to keep the trails tacky, opening day is guaranteed to be a good time.

Next week will be all about improvement with the help of the mighty excavator. A massive reroute is planned for the bottom section of Barn Burner that will make you want to get back on the chair, and see if you can pin it a little more on your next ride. The big line in the Rocky Mountain Flow Zone will also receive a new feature. All the crew is saying is that it involves a big log boner. The crew didn't forget about the novice bikers either. The upper section of Smooth Smoothie is getting graded down to the base of the Crystal Chair to make that gentle decent smooth like butter.

Mark Saturday, June 27, on your riding calendar, because it is going to be a banger day with the bike park opening, and the premiere of Radical Films Kranked Revolve at Masa's Bar + Grill taking place in the evening. For more information on the premiere click here.

Bike Parks of BC and Anthill Films Urge Mountain Bikers to FOLLOW ME…

Bike Parks BC, a marketing consortium of lift accessed bike parks including Sun Peaks, Whistler-Blackcomb, Mount Washington, Silver Star, and Tourism Fernie is pleased to announce its sponsorship of Anthill Films’ new movie, FOLLOW ME... Made up of key members of the award winning film crew The Collective, the film features some of the best mountain bikers in the world, including Sam Hill, Gee Atherton, Brandon Semenuk, Cam McCaul, Thomas Vanderham, Matt Hunter, Ben Boyko, Kurt Sorge, Steve Smith, and Geoff Gulevich.

FOLLOW ME... will highlight many incredible riding locations around the world, including the four bike parks that make up Bike Parks BC. FOLLOW ME’s central concept is ‘no one rides alone’ - focusing on the idea that the best times riders have on their bikes is when they are out riding with friends. This theme fits perfectly with Bike Parks BC’s goal to encourage mountain bikers to get out and explore bike parks around the province and experience their amazing trails and diverse landscapes.

“We are really stoked to be working with Bike Parks of BC on this project,” says Anthill’s director Darcy Wittenburg. “The film is all about riding with your friends and one of the best ways to do that is in a park. Sessioning trails, pushing each other to try something new, joking on the way back up the chair – this is what we love about riding in the park, hopefully we can share a bit of that through the film.”

Visit www.anthillfilms.com for more about the film.

Bike Park Update for May 28, 2009

The Trail Crew finally got out on the trails this week, and got a little dirty in the process. With snow still restricting access to the top of the mountain, the crew focused their efforts on the lower trails in the Bike Park.

Behind Bars got buffed from top to bottom with great improvements being made to the flow of the trail. A few small berms were added, and a lot of roots were removed to make the flat sections faster and easier to pedal. The Biker Cross got its annual face lift with all the jumps and berms being trued up. Most of the large rocks were also removed to make this trail even faster than it was before. Root Dog and the lower third of Smooth Smoothie also received a good buff.

For the remainder of the week the crew will tackle Home Run, Arm Pump, No Pump, and the lower sections of Route 66, Steam Shovel, and Wagon Wheel. After all this is complete the snow should have melted enough that we can start working from the top of the park down to the bottom.

Bike Park Update for May 20, 2009

With the snow melting steadily another season of downhill adrenaline filled fun is almost upon us at the Sun Peaks Bike Park. The Trail Crew has been hired, and starting May 25 they will begin working seven days a week buffing and enhancing the Bike Park trail system.

The spring runoff has been forgiving this year meaning that the trails are still in somewhat decent shape. This will allow the trail crew to spend more time enhancing the existing bike park, rather than spending all spring rebuilding it.

The main focus for the crew this summer will be to keep improving an already amazing network of trails. You can expect to see armoring being done in key places on trails like Route 66 and Steam Shovel to get rid of those annoying brake bumps. Other projects scheduled for the summer ahead include adding more flow to certain areas of the intermediate single track trails, improving drainage on the entire Bike Park, along with rebuilding and adding new wooden features.

With opening day fast approaching on Saturday, June 27, stay tuned as we whip the park in to shape.
