Sun Peaks Bike Now Closed for the Season

As of Sunday, September 27, at 5:00pm, the Sun Peaks Bike Park is now closed for summer 2009 operations. With an epic summer having gone down we're sad to see the park close for the season, but winter is just around the corner.

Huge thanks to all season pass holders, and everyone who came to ride the Sun Peaks Bike Park this summer. Thanks to all the staff at the Bicycle Café, Full Boar Bike Store, Taboo Cycles, and Spoke and Motion for your support this summer at the bike races, spreading the word about the hill, and choosing to slay the bike park on your days off. Props also need to go out to Karl Heldt for shooting a sick series of bike park webisodes featuring Dylan Sherrard and Justin Terwiel. His third webisode is still to be released, so stay locked to sunpeaksresort.com and pinkbike.com. Thanks to Justin Terwiel, Graham Agassiz, Cheryl Beattie, and Matt Hunter for taking the time out of their hectic schedules to coach the next generation of super groms at the Sun Peaks Freeride Camps. And last, but definitely not least thanks to the Sun Peaks Trail Crew for building all of us a sick park this season, and keeping the trails well maintained.

You'll see us early next spring in Anthill Film's "Follow Me" so stay close to www.anthillfilms.com to track the making of the film and the release date. Till next year enjoy the amazing fall weather, and riding your local trails.

Bike Park Update for September 18, 2009

There are only two weekends left to take advantage of the Bike Park here at Sun Peaks, so there is no better time than the present to pin some lift accessed mountain bike trails. The trails are still in great shape and with no bike traffic during the week the trail crew has been able to spend more time building new wood features.

Sugar got a new board walk that splits at the end to give riders a jump line or easy out. The step-up boosts riders up onto a five foot high platform, twenty feet in length that ends on a huge boulder. You can choose to roll your way off the boulder, or drop a few feet to the landing below the rock. I was so stoked on this feature that I hit it about eight times while we were testing it. A couple of the skinny bridges on Sweet One also got replaced with nice new solid bridges. They will add a lot more flow to the trail allowing riders to carry more speed. Next week the trail crew will continue to add more wood to Sugar, so make sure you are up for closing weekend.

For next Saturday, September 26, the Bicycle Café has been in the lab brainstorming a year end grass dual slalom on the Platter followed by a video premiere at Bottom's Bar & Grill. Word has it that they have dubbed it the Yeah Brew! Stay locked to the site, because details will be announced this weekend.

See on the trails.

Post Gummy Bear DH Update and Results

The 2009 Gummy Bear DH took place this past Sunday, September 13, and all in the entire event was a success. Seventy one competitors showed up to race to race some classic Sun Peaks single track, two of which were from Switzerland, one as young as eight, and a forty-eight year old father who came out to pin it with his kids.

There were a couple kinks with the timing for the Women's Open Category, but the female entrants were more than patient while we figured it out. Thanks to everyone in the Women's Open Category for showing a lot of grace while we straightened out the women's results.

Taking the Men's Open Category and also claiming the fastest time of the day was Justin Terwiel with a finish time of 2:12.6. Word has it that Justin spent half an hour prior to the race doing Yoga at the top of the course. Just goes to show how far focus and hard work can take you.

A big thanks to Sombrio and Paul Kalisch for sponsoring the Gummy Bear DH, and hooking up all the winners with a ton of sick prizes. Thanks also to the volunteers for being there on race day to help tape the course and Marshall. Thanks to Dylan Sherrard for supplying the music. Who new Taylor Swift could sound so good at a bike race? And finally, thanks to the trail crew for making sure the course was dialled for race day. See you next season at the 2010 Gummy Bear DH.

Express Yourself!

Check out this comment we received from a guest from who was riding Sun Peaks this past weekend. He hit the essence of the Sun Peaks Bike Park bang on: it is all about trail diversity, technical riding, and wanting to develop your skills as a rider.

Thank you so much for keeping the mountain in mountain biking! My wife and I are very experienced riders, and we had an absolute blast at Sun Peaks last weekend. We have noticed a disturbing trend of all the parks switching to primarily machine built jump trails. Although I do enjoy a jump trail on occasion, I would much rather ride natural, steep, and technical trails, which we found plenty of at Sun Peaks. Trails like Insanity One, Honey Drop, and Kaboom were fantastic! They featured high speed sections with natural hits plus awesome steeps. We also fell in love with Gummy Bear to Arm Pump. Your bike park is the first park that we weren’t bored with after one day of riding. I understand you have to cater to what people want, and a large number of riders flock to the machine built stuff, possibly because they lack the skills to ride steep technical runs, but I wanted to make sure that you know there are those of us out here that like the other trails as well. I sincerely hope you continue to provide the type of trails that got most of us into this sport in the first place!

Thanks for the great bike park, and fantastic trails.

Bike Park Update for September 3, 2009

The much anticipated fall weather has arrived here at Sun Peaks after a long dry summer. The trails have been begging for moisture, and that’s what they got today with rain and lots of it. It came a bit to late in the week though for the trail crew to take full advantage of it, but some times all you need is some rain to make your favorite trail sweet again. Especially when it comes to good old fashion single track and Sun Peaks has plenty of it.

The crew was short staffed this week, due to a couple riding injuries. Work was concentrated mainly on routine trail maintenance including raking and fixing bomb holes wherever possible. As always though, there is something new in the bike park. Take a ride down Steam Shovel and check out the completely revamped section in the upper area. A few berms were brought back to life, and two of the jumps were recreated to add a lot more action to this part of the trail. On Sugar look for a new braid just after the first flat rock that will lead you to a four foot rock drop that that takes you back onto the existing trail.

This Monday, September 7, will be the last day for daily bike park operations. The following week we will begin weekend operations, and be open Friday to Sunday till the end of September. For more information on hours of operation click here.

It is sad to see things starting to come to an end, but the trail crew doesn’t intend to stop working. We have plans to keep building and enhancing the wood work in the park, so make sure you get up for a few weekend rides this month.

See you on the trails.

Post Canada Cup Report + Pics

This past weekend Sun Peaks Resort was honoured to host the Canada Cup DH Finals, BC Cup DH Finals, and BC XC Finals. It is safe to say that with close to 300 DH racers registered this past weekend that DH racing is alive and well at Sun Peaks. Numerous XC racers were also overheard discussing that if you could race at Sun Peaks you could race anywhere. When it is all said and done, the resort considers the event a huge success, and we're excited to continue supporting the racing scene.

Sun Peaks is sending out a huge thank you to everyone involved with event! Thanks to Henry Perjil and his team of dedicated volunteers; all the volunteers who came out to course marshal; the entire first aid crew for making sure everyone was safe; Andrew Danyluk for the killer photos; the Sun Peaks Bike Park Trail Crew for getting the courses dialled for racing; CCN.com and NSMB.com for covering the event; all the local bike shops for being supporters of the Sun Peaks Bike Park; Scott and Jason from Cycles Lambert for stepping up with prizing; Hayes Brakes for making the trip to Sun Peaks; the Sun Peaks Events Department for answering countless emails and phone calls to make this happen; and finally everyone else who supported the event in any shape or form.

Bike Park Update for August 21, 2009

With the largest race of our season almost upon of us here at Sun Peaks, I would have to say that the trail crew pulled it off again. Both the DH and XC race courses are buffed and ready to go for the Canada Cup Finals. The rest of the bike park is also in deadly shape for those not racing this weekend.

We got started on the DH course early in the week, so we could take full advantage of the recent precipitation. With the dirt nice and moist we were able to reshape the entire top section and add a lot of height to the berms. This section might not be the most technical, but its definitely going to be the most fun. The rest of the DH course is looking good, but the dust is starting to kick up with the hot sunny weather over the past few days. The XC course is all dialed in as well. With lots of grinding climbs, technical single track, and challenging downhill sections the best all around XC racer is sure to emerge. Check out the snaps below in the Canada Cup Update.

For those looking to slay the rest of the bike park this weekend, the crew worked hard to keep the other bike park trails in good shape. Brushing was done on Behind Bars, Insanity One, and Honey Drop to improve the site lines and keep the trails safe. Mach received a few new berms that will keep you off your brakes, and improve the flow of the trail. For those looking to pin it Hi Octane, upper DH, and Smitty's Steeps also got buffed and will be ready to ride this weekend.

See you on the trails.

Canada Cup Mountain Bike Racing Returns to Sun Peaks

This weekend we're excited to host the Canada Cup DH Finals, BC Cup DH #7 Finals & Championship, and the BC XC Finals! Over 600 athletes are expected to compete this weekend in both the XC and DH formats.

For the past two weeks the trail crew has been preparing both the cross country and downhill courses. Mother Nature must also love mountain biking, because the bike park received some much needed rainfall during the build week for the DH course. The trail crew took full advantage of the rainfall and rebuilt the DH course from top to bottom. The berms on the course are so perfect that it is a crime given the abuse they are going to take this weekend. A couple of new sections of trail were also roughed in to take riders to the new finish area by the base of the Sunburst Express. Check out the DH course pictures below in the slideshow.

The finish area of the XC and DH race courses is also going to be a lot more exciting this year with a bike expo area setup. Cycles Lambert is going to be on the mountain showing off their products from Race Face. Along with Cycles Lambert the crew from Hayes Disc Brakes will be at Sun Peaks with their World Cup truck and trailer. Local Kamloops bike shops will also be out in full force making sure you have all the parts, tubes, and tires you need for the race.

Bike Park Update for August 14, 2009

With Mother Nature giving us a break from the summer heat and the rain showers we've had over the past week, the bike park is once again in prime shape. The dust has settled, and there are stashes of tacky buffed trails all over the place.

The trail crew took a break from building features this week, and worked hard to take advantage of the recent precipitation. The Biker X got a top to bottom buff with a few jumps and berms getting tweaked. Steam Shovel received its weekly buff with a few berm enhancements right after the first step up. A diligent rock sweep down the Ridge section on Steam Shovel was also done, so you can once again pin it without having your entire body rattled. Route 66 also got some love along with Honey Drop, Sugar, the upper section of Arm Pump, and Barn Burner.

The trail crew also reopened an old section of trail where Barn Burner, Gummy Bear, and Mach meet at Road 04. Look for the alternate line to rider's right across the OSV ski run, as soon as you cross the Road 04, and before the really loose and dusty section that took riders straight to the 5 Mile Road. This trail will keep riders off the 5 Mile Road, and offer a loamy single track trail through the trees that takes riders to the top of Home Run. Check out the trail on the slideshow below.

The Canada Cup DH Finals, BC Cup DH #7 Finals & Championship, and BC XC Finals are only a week away, and the crew is committed to ensuring both trails will be in excellent shape for the racers. The XC course got buffed from start to finish, so the trail is ready for training. A few new sections were also added to the DH course this past week. The DH course is open this weekend, but will be closed for the majority of next week to prepare for the race. For more information on the Canada Cup / BC Cup DH and XC Finals click here.

See you on the trails this weekend.

Bike Park Update for August 7, 2009

With only a short three day work week, the crew worked hard to get the trails back in shape after the long weekend. We received a very small amount of rain on Tuesday evening that kept the dust down for a few hours, but not enough for us to rebuild any trails.

Steam Shovel got its weekly buff on Thursday, and should be in good shape for the weekend, along with Insanity One, Smitty's Steeps, Cahilty, and Gummy Bear. There are also some additions in the park this week for mountain bikers. Gummy Bear received two new berms that will increase the flow of the trail, and allow riders to stay off their brakes. The crew also finished the big build project that we started last week on Sugar. This bridge turned out real nice, and is a nice addition to Sugar that can be ridden by everyone. It may take riders a few tries to really get the feature dialed, but this is what riding at Sun Peaks is all about.

Over the next couple weeks we will increase our focus on trail maintenance by patching up holes, and bringing a bunch of the berms back to life. We will also be starting to prepare for the Canada Cup DH which is going to be quite a challenge, due to the lack of rainfall. Luckily we have a few tricks up our sleeves to get water on the upper section of the downhill race course.

See you on the trails this weekend.

Bike Park Update for July 30, 2009

What a summer this is shaping up to be. New records are being set every day for high temperatures across British Columbia. This weather makes for a great tan, but also makes things difficult for the trail crew. We can’t buff trails out the way we want to because they will turn to dust. Chainsaws also have to be shut down before noon, due to the high fire hazard. Any build project we start takes us twice as many days as it normally would, and some trails are starting to get a little rough. When I say rough I mean not smooth like butter, but still fun to ride. I haven’t had a chance to ride any other bike parks this summer, but I’ve been told that our trails are holding up in comparison to the other parks.

Last week the crew found a bridge located on Sugar just after the Homesteader ski run that had reached its expiration date and needed to be replaced. It was about eighty feet long on fairly flat ground with a large rock near the start of it that wasn’t being utilized to its full potential. It is not very often that we get flat ground to build on here, so a lot of planning went into this one. While brainstorming the feature with the trail crew, the plan changed about ten times. The wood feature ended up being a three set of eight foot wood table tops that get progressively more aggressive as you flow threw them. The tables can be rolled, aired, or styled with a manual, creating a feature that can be slayed by everyone. Unfortunately though due to the high fire hazard that we are working with right now chainsaws have to be shut down half way through the work day, causing the build to take a little longer to finish. Hopefully it will be ready to rock by early next week.

The crew continued to do what they could with the rest of the trails this week raking and shoveling loose rocks, and knocking back the vegetation to improve site lines. The shale drop at the end of Kaboom got a major cleaning, I don’t think I have ever seen it look this clean in the three years I have been riding the Sun Peaks Bike Park.

During the weeks ahead the crew will start to prepare for the Canada Cup and BC Cup DH and XC Finals being held at Sun Peaks August 22 and 23. With no substantial amounts of rain forecasted in the next few weeks it is going to be quite a challenge to get some water on the downhill course, and keep it in good shape for the race.

If anybody knows a rain dance now is the time.

Bike Park Update for July 24, 2009

With summer hitting hard this week and temperatures in the high thirties in Kamloops, it was time to escape the heat. Some chose the obvious and headed to the beach, but those who decided to make the trek to higher ground found cool mountain air and great riding at the Sun Peaks Bike Park.

The mud pits at the bottom of Insanity One were put to bed for good with the addition of two new boardwalk sections. The two new sections link up with two existing bridges to make a nice long bridge with multiple turns and kinks. It was nice to be working on a feature, and have riders pass by thanking us for the much needed improvement.

We also got resourceful this week with some carpet that we salvaged from the scrap yard. We were able to get rid of large sections of brake bumps on Steam Shovel and Arm Pump. Steam Shovel also received a new wood to dirt jump at the top of the trail. Graham Agassiz liked it so much he threw down a nice no foot can off it first try.

Zazel Track and Black Bear Grind have been brushed out and buffed in preparation for the Canada Cup XC race in August, so get up here and start training. Look for the entrance to these trails before you enter the last section of Arm Pump. If you’re looking to access the upper village for lunch, Zazel Track will drop you in right at the top of the village by 5 Forty Cafe and Macker's Sports Grill.

With the hot and dry weather this past couple weeks some of the machine made trails are becoming a bit rougher and the dust is definitely present, but overall the park is in great shape for this time of year. Come escape the heat this weekend, and make the journey up to the Bike Park.

Anthill Films on Location at Sun Peaks for Follow Me

This past week the Sun Peaks Bike Park was the latest shooting location for Anthill Films upcoming release Follow Me. The film crew along with Thomas Vanderham and Matt Hunter arrived at the resort on Thursday evening, and spent the following four days shooting a ton of different zones in the park with a huge focus on single track with a little machine made thrown in. Both Thomas and Matt fully pinned it for the camera throughout the shoot, and the footage they got was pure Sun Peaks gnar. We don’t want to release too much information on the shoot in regards to zones and what went down during their time here, but be rest assured Sun Peaks is going to be represented well in Follow Me when it is released in Spring 2010.

Be sure to check out the news section and video section of www.anthillfilms.com for more information on Follow Me, and to stay in touch with the film crew and athletes throughout the creative process. The latest news release called "Bike Pirates Bring Down Humanity" is well worth the visit to their site.

Bike Park Update for July 17, 2009

With nothing but sunny skies in the forecast, another great weekend of riding is upon us here at the Sun Peaks Bike Park. Last week we buffed out all the machine made trails including Steam Shovel, Route 66, and Home Run. This week it was all about getting back to the roots, and buffing out all of the single track trails.

The trail crew started on Kaboom and Keener early in the week and worked there way across the mountain all the way to Gummy Bear. With a total of ten trails being buffed and enhanced this week you’re bound to find something new in the bike park this weekend.

Gummy Bear received an 80 foot extension to its board walk, half way down the trail, bringing it to well over 100 feet long now. The crew lost a lot of blood to the mosquitoes while getting this project done, but it was well worth it to see such a sweet project get finished in just two days.

The bottom of the DH course was finally taken off the closed list due to the success of our drainage project last week. So all the racers can pin it down the course, and get there line dialed for the Canada Cup in August. Hi Octane and Insanity One also got a few new berms, adding to the flow of these classic trails. The bottom section of Insanity One will be closed though for the weekend to allow for a drainage issue to dry up. The only other trail on the closed list for the weekend will be the last section of Mach, due to an under ground spring that hasn’t gone away since it rained last week.

With the arrival of my new Rocky Mountain Bike today you can bet you will see me out on the trails this weekend. I’m so stoked to go ride. See you on the trails.

Bike Park Update for July 10, 2009

If there was ever a recipe for perfect bike park conditions I think it would be this week. The resort received over 20 mm of rain in the past few days so you know what that means? Tacky, fast, and buffed trails with a lot of high fives.

The trail crew took full advantage of this weather, and went on a buffing mission starting with Route 66. We buffed this trail from top to bottom, attacking brake bumps, and bringing the upper berm section back to life. Pin it down the top section of Route 66, because this trail is built for speed.

Steam Shovel received love all week starting on Monday. We added a new step down floater jump after the first step up. It replaces an old jump that landed you flat on to some shale. We pulled the takeoff back, and rounded out the old jump to make a proper landing. We also smoothed out a few kinks in the wall ride with some plywood to make it stronger and much friendlier. To top Steam Shovel off all of the brake bumps got destroyed by the trail crew's shovels, so it should be a smooth ride for a while.

The trail crew also went hard on the bottom section of DH, putting in 80 feet of drain pipe, and about 100 buckets of gravel to fix the drainage issue that has been keeping this section closed this season. Unfortunately, due to the immense amount of rain this past week, we will be keeping it closed for a bit longer to allow all the mud to dry up. Gummy Bear will also be on the closed list until it recovers from the wet conditions.

With the extended forecast making for great trail conditions, be sure you get up to the Sun Peaks Bike Park, and have some fun with your friends on the trails. Don’t forget about are Extended Play hours on Fridays. The lift turns till 7:00pm every Friday during July and August. For more information on Extended Play click here.

See you on the trails!

Yeah Bro! Biker Cross Results

The Yeah Bro! Biker Cross went off this past weekend with sixty riders showed up to pin it on the Biker Cross Course. There was definitely a mixed field of riders and bikes on the course throughout the day with tons of Troy Lee racing kits, tight girl jeans, Nike 6.0 shoes riding flats, and clipless pedals. The top five competitors in the open category is a testament to this. Brett Turcotte reclaimed his title at the race winning the Open Category for the second year in a row.

Thanks again to Jon Hadfield and Race Face for supporting the event. Jon's comments on Yeah Bro! Biker Cross were great to hear.

"Grass roots style events like the Yeah Bro! Biker Cross is definitely something that we’d like to support more. It’s awesome to see the under 15’s flying down the course and having so much fun. It is great for the sport, and a positive event for Race Face to be involved with."

Thanks also to all the volunteers for helping out with the event. Events like this would not be possible without your help.

New Sun Peaks Bike Park Video – Braaap!

On Wednesday, June 24, and Saturday, June 27, we set out to make a new bike park short video simply with the idea of getting people excited for the riding season at Sun Peaks. We were stoked to have Matt Hunter, Graham Agassiz, Chayse Marshall, Dylan Sherrard, Ian Killick and friends come out to shoot. Actually it wasn't too hard finding people for the shoot when we told them one of the two days of shooting would take place before the park opened to the general public. The trails featured in the video include Barn Burner, Insanity One, Steam Shovel, and Smitty's Steeps. To watch Braaap click here.
Bike Park Update for July 3, 2009

With opening week under our belts, and a lot of great feedback (positive and constructive) coming our way, the crew is stoked to keep up a high quality of trails. Almost every trail saw some form of buffing this week.

Steam Shovel got worked over by the trail crew at the end of the day on Thursday. We smoothed out the brake bumps and fixed every take off. The take offs are now more consistent throughout the run, and suitable for the size of each jump. Next week we will give the Steam Shovel wall ride a huge face lift with the addition of some plywood to smooth out the riding surface, and make the feature stronger. The plywood will also allow for a much bigger dirt berm at the bottom of the wall, and create a better angle for those riders that stayed away from the feature before.

If you're looking to slay some intermediate trails this weekend Gummy Bear, Cahilty, and lower Mach opened up this week. The DH course still remains closed, due to the large mud bog at the base of the Elevation Chairlift. The crew will be working on this issue early next week putting in proper drainage.

Don’t just stick to the usual runs this weekend, because the entire park is in great shape. Sugar and Sweet One are still super tacky, and in great shape. Behind Bars is also worth riding. The crew did a ton of work on this trail prior to opening to remove some of the awkward pedaling sections. Behind Bars now has more flow, and some cool technical lines.

Don’t forget about the Yeah Bro! Biker Cross going on this Saturday, July 4. A ton of anodized prizing just rolled into the office today and it is sick! Don't miss out on the fun. For more information on the Yeah Bro! Biker Cross click here.

To get your stoke going for the weekend make sure you check out the pictures posted below from the video/photo shoot we had at the start of the season. The pictures were taken by legendary mountain bike photographer John Gibson. The video footage from the day should be released any day now, so stay locked to sunpeaksresort.com.

Bike Park Update for June 26, 2009

With only one day to go before we open on Saturday, June 27, things couldn’t be any better. All the trails that can be opened are buffed and ready to go. The resort has received a substantial amount of rain over the past few days, so every thing is tacky. I think this will make for a banger opening weekend and a solid trail base for the season.

The trail crew stayed busy this week adding new features to the bike park. Sugar received a brand new drop to a nice big dirt landing that will be here for years to come. This feature is located off a road intersection towards the top of the run. The new log feature in the Rocky Mountain Flow Zone was also finished, giving the pro line a whole new look. Many hours were also spent reshaping the jumps in the pro line so the whole Flow Zone is dialed and ready to go for Saturday.

We had a few guests riders come check out the trails this past Wednesday and they were extremely stoked on what they rode. One of our guests, Matt Hunter, said that the new re route on Barn Burner was so good he barely touched his brakes coming down. If you can’t make opening day, be sure to check back on sunpeaksresort.com next week to watch the first Bike Park webisode of the season featuring Matt Hunter, Graham Agassiz, Chayse Marshall, Dylan Sherrard, and Ian Killick.

Thanks for checking out the Sun Peaks Bike Park Update. Saturday is going to be SICK.

Bike Park Update for June 18, 2009

The crew sat down for beers at the end of the day today, and the subject came up on how good everyone was feeling. Forearms were looking ripped, and a few new belt notches were being bragged about. The crew was starting to wonder who has gained more over the past few weeks, the bike park or the trail crew. I would have to say that the bike park has definitely gained more after all the accomplishments this past week.

The week ended on a high note with the placement of a nice 20' log at the top of the pro line in the Rocky Flow Zone. This log jam will drop riders in with ease, so they can get ready to send it on the big hits.

The re-route on Barn Burner was also a huge success with the addition of seven more berms, and a lot more flow added to the trail. The last berm is over six feet tall. The berm is nice and steep, and it might feel more like a wall ride than a berm at that height. Check out the picture from the build.

At this point in time every trail in the bike park has received a substantial amount of work. With one week to go before opening day on Saturday, June 27, there will be enough time to do last minute maintenance, and add a few new features to the trails.

Bike Park Update for June 12, 2009

Opening day of the Sun Peaks Bike Park is fast approaching, and the confidence of the trail crew is riding high. The crew is certain that the trails they have been working on seven days a week for the last three weeks, will bring smiles and high fives to every one who shows up for opening day on Saturday, June 27.  The to do list and the wet mucky sections are getting smaller every day, and with just enough rain in the forecast to keep the trails tacky, opening day is guaranteed to be a good time.

Next week will be all about improvement with the help of the mighty excavator. A massive reroute is planned for the bottom section of Barn Burner that will make you want to get back on the chair, and see if you can pin it a little more on your next ride. The big line in the Rocky Mountain Flow Zone will also receive a new feature. All the crew is saying is that it involves a big log boner. The crew didn't forget about the novice bikers either. The upper section of Smooth Smoothie is getting graded down to the base of the Crystal Chair to make that gentle decent smooth like butter.

Mark Saturday, June 27, on your riding calendar, because it is going to be a banger day with the bike park opening, and the premiere of Radical Films Kranked Revolve at Masa's Bar + Grill taking place in the evening. For more information on the premiere click here.

Bike Parks of BC and Anthill Films Urge Mountain Bikers to FOLLOW ME…

Bike Parks BC, a marketing consortium of lift accessed bike parks including Sun Peaks, Whistler-Blackcomb, Mount Washington, Silver Star, and Tourism Fernie is pleased to announce its sponsorship of Anthill Films’ new movie, FOLLOW ME... Made up of key members of the award winning film crew The Collective, the film features some of the best mountain bikers in the world, including Sam Hill, Gee Atherton, Brandon Semenuk, Cam McCaul, Thomas Vanderham, Matt Hunter, Ben Boyko, Kurt Sorge, Steve Smith, and Geoff Gulevich.

FOLLOW ME... will highlight many incredible riding locations around the world, including the four bike parks that make up Bike Parks BC. FOLLOW ME’s central concept is ‘no one rides alone’ - focusing on the idea that the best times riders have on their bikes is when they are out riding with friends. This theme fits perfectly with Bike Parks BC’s goal to encourage mountain bikers to get out and explore bike parks around the province and experience their amazing trails and diverse landscapes.

“We are really stoked to be working with Bike Parks of BC on this project,” says Anthill’s director Darcy Wittenburg. “The film is all about riding with your friends and one of the best ways to do that is in a park. Sessioning trails, pushing each other to try something new, joking on the way back up the chair – this is what we love about riding in the park, hopefully we can share a bit of that through the film.”

Visit www.anthillfilms.com for more about the film.

Bike Park Update for May 28, 2009

The Trail Crew finally got out on the trails this week, and got a little dirty in the process. With snow still restricting access to the top of the mountain, the crew focused their efforts on the lower trails in the Bike Park.

Behind Bars got buffed from top to bottom with great improvements being made to the flow of the trail. A few small berms were added, and a lot of roots were removed to make the flat sections faster and easier to pedal. The Biker Cross got its annual face lift with all the jumps and berms being trued up. Most of the large rocks were also removed to make this trail even faster than it was before. Root Dog and the lower third of Smooth Smoothie also received a good buff.

For the remainder of the week the crew will tackle Home Run, Arm Pump, No Pump, and the lower sections of Route 66, Steam Shovel, and Wagon Wheel. After all this is complete the snow should have melted enough that we can start working from the top of the park down to the bottom.

Bike Park Update for May 20, 2009

With the snow melting steadily another season of downhill adrenaline filled fun is almost upon us at the Sun Peaks Bike Park. The Trail Crew has been hired, and starting May 25 they will begin working seven days a week buffing and enhancing the Bike Park trail system.

The spring runoff has been forgiving this year meaning that the trails are still in somewhat decent shape. This will allow the trail crew to spend more time enhancing the existing bike park, rather than spending all spring rebuilding it.

The main focus for the crew this summer will be to keep improving an already amazing network of trails. You can expect to see armoring being done in key places on trails like Route 66 and Steam Shovel to get rid of those annoying brake bumps. Other projects scheduled for the summer ahead include adding more flow to certain areas of the intermediate single track trails, improving drainage on the entire Bike Park, along with rebuilding and adding new wooden features.

With opening day fast approaching on Saturday, June 27, stay tuned as we whip the park in to shape.
