Shredidential Election '09 Slopestyle Results

March 19, 2009 – Sun Peaks, BC – The state of the shred is alive and well at Sun Peaks with 53 athletes showing up to compete at the Shredidential Election '09 this past Sunday. Competitors came from all over all over British Columbia, and as far away as Toronto, Ontario.

The Grom Category for both ski and snowboard was off the hook with athletes throwing down sevens on the Nancy Jump and stepping fearlessly to the 55' Showtime Jump. The category name might need to be changed to Super Grom for next year's event.

With a first place finish in the Junior Snowboard category at the Shredidential, and a previous first in his cap at The Garden, Stefan Gagnier has got to be stoked on his ability to perform in competition. It was cool to see the athletes in the Junior Ski category working on throwing down technical tricks, while understanding the importance of getting a clean run.

For the Open Ski and Snowboard Finals, Mother Nature decided to bring a serious blizzard our way. Throwing down solid runs all day, Leeland Paxton weathered the storm, and threw down the best snowboard run of the finals to land him self in first place. The finals for ski was as close as they come with Whistler resident Dane Degrugter taking first by adding just a little more rotation on one of his tricks than Kieran Nikula.

Props to the Oronge Snowboard Shop for backing this event, and their continuous love for the local scene. Thanks to all the event volunteers who helped make this event a reality. A big shout out to Toby, Kieran, and all the park volunteers for building an amazing course for the event.

This Park is Packed

March 13, 2009 – Sun Peaks, BC – Over the past few weeks the Terrain Park here at Sun Peaks Resort has continued to grow. We added side cars to the two bottom jumps setting the park up for a very progressive and fun spring. The XL jumps are still 45' and 55', and the two side cars are coming in at 30’ and 40’. We also changed up a few rails. The 40' box was brought down to the bottom where it has been put in as a flat box. This feature is so much more fun now. Just up the slope from that feature, the barrel got placed on top of a volcano. The fat fridge box was put in flat with a nice wide take off. The snowboarders have been getting super pressed on it. I would have to say that the small hip we put in the green park that ended up getting a 15 foot black culvert pipe added to it, as a cannon slide or bonk is the coolest edition to the park. We will continue to build this week in preparation for the Shredential Election '09 Slopestyle this weekend. Click here for more information on the Shredidential. We have plans to change a few more rails, and the 30’ jump will get a bit of step up flavor to it. We also have plans to get the bottom landings winched, so the slopestyle course will be dialed for the comp. Come check out the park, because there is not much time left with spring just around the corner.

The Garden Continues to Grow

February 25, 2009 – Sun Peaks, BC – With 98 competitors from as far away as Saskatchewan, and an age span going from 11 to 33 the Garden has been deemed a success by Oronge and the Sun Peaks Terrain Park crew. Tons of new faces showed up for the Garden on February 15, which really shook up the local scene, and threw the status quo out the window. Check out the contest results below.

With thanks to everyone who participated in the Garden, the event was able to raise over $560.00 in donations for the Bluebird Day Fund. The Bluebird Day Fund provides local riders and park skiers with support and/or resources to assist growth and development in their respective sports. For more information on the Bluebird Day Fund click here.

The Oronge Boardshop hopes the stoke from The Garden keeps on going for the Shredidential Election '09 slopestyle taking place March 15. With $1000 cash on the line, and thousands of dollars more in prizing make sure you don't miss this event. For more information on the Shredidential Election '09 click here.

It is Looking Good

January 25, 2009 – Sun Peaks, BC – Well the last two weeks have been epic in the park with nothing but sunshine and a perfectly manicured park. All the hard work has paid off and I finally got to take a few laps thru the park, and it is definitely the best one that we’ve built so far. The slope style is now done from the top to the bottom with the addition of the 40 foot down box, flat down box, the flat down flat rail, and the 45 foot jump. The bottom two jumps have been getting worked over hard with all the sunshine we have had lately. We also spent some time in the lower rail section this past week rebuilding a couple of rails. The 20 foot down box got mellowed out, and the 16 foot flat box got changed to a nice up box set up.

Come get stoked at Sun Peaks!

The Park is Getting Packed Full of Features

January 2, 2009 – Sun Peaks, BC – The Park Crew worked hard last week to get the Terrain Park open from top to bottom for the last few days of the Christmas break. We opened up the top section of the Terrain Park on New Year’s Day with ten new features to play on. The new features included four jumps ranging from 15' to 55', back to back C-Box’s, a big flat down rail, 30' down rail, 24' flat rail, and the hitching post. The Park Crew will continue building next week adding even more features to an already sick park. Our cat drivers are in there every night tweaking it to make it that much smoother, so come check it out if you haven’t all ready.

See you all in the park!

It is Starting to Take Shape

December 24, 2008 – Sun Peaks, BC – Over the past few weeks a lot of things have being happening in the Sun Peaks Terrain Park. We had consistent -20°C temperatures, so the park filled up fast with lots of man made snow. We have been pushing snow all week trying to get the main park up and running. We were able to get a new rail section open for last weekend bringing our feature count up to fourteen. This new rail area will be where Grandma's Home Made Rail Jam is hosted on December 27. For more information click here. We will continue to keep building this week with our goal set on opening the two bottom jumps, and the forty foot down box for Christmas morning. The two jumps will both be fifty feet plus. If we have enough snow and time, we will add a second smaller take off to each jump. The rest of the park is shaping up fast and will be opening soon.

Stay tuned more features coming soon!

We Have Rails Set Up!

December 6, 2008 – Sun Peaks, BC – I have to start this update by thanking my volunteers for coming out, and helping us get our park up and running. We put in a marathon shift in some of the worst building conditions I have ever seen to get the park ready for this past weekend. We managed to get six rail features in.

  • 10 foot butter box
  • 10 foot plastic culvert up on a bank
  • 10x10x12 down flat down box
  • 16 foot rainbow box up on a spine
  • 16 foot flat box
  • 20 foot down box

Getting these rails in the snow was definitely worth it. The session that went down on Saturday was sick. Everyone that came out was so stoked, rode hard from open to close, and set the bar high for the season.

See you in the park!

Everything Is Coming Together

December 4, 2008 – Sun Peaks, BC – The new rails arrived today, and they're looking good. Snow Park Solutions just keeps getting better at making rails. Since the first order of rails we received five years ago, the quality and workmanship has always been of the highest quality. Our snowmaking team has also been working hard with the colder temperatures we’ve had the last few days. They have produced enough snow that we will be able to have a small rail park open for the weekend. Snowmaking efforts will all be focused on the Terrain Park after the Sundance run is completed. With a little luck we should have the entire park completed at the start of the New Year.

See you all in the park for a session!

Time To Get Stoked

November 14, 2008 – Sun Peaks, BC – That’s right it is time to get your stoke on if you're planning on doing a few laps in the Sun Peaks Terrain Parks this winter. We’ve come through again with a bunch of improvements for the 2008-09 winter season!

Thanks to our terrain park sponsor Monster Energy, and the local Blue Bird Day Fund we will be adding three new rails to our fleet of features. This will bring our total number of rails up to 26 for you to slide, bonk, and stall this winter. Darrin at Snow Park Solutions is in the process of building us a nice big 10ft x 24ft Flat Down Rail, a second 24ft C-Box allowing back to back C’s, and a 40ft Flat Box for change ups.

We also did extensive dirt work in the park this summer creating two massive dirt decks for us to build the two showcase jumps on. A HUGE thanks goes out to Diamond Lil’s Trucking and Powder Ventures Excavating for providing the dirt and the machines to make this happen. Having these dirt decks in place will help us get these jumps open for the season faster, put two take offs on them right away, and hopefully create deeper landings. The dirt decks will also decrease the amount of snowmaking needed in half to build these monster jumps, which will free up snow for other features. The dirt work doesn’t end there either, because the blue park received some truck loads of dirt to make the grade mellower and better suited for rail features.

As well, all of our star cat drivers have returned this season to deliver an even better product than last year. You can’t beat cat drivers that spend all night grooming the park and all day riding it. The park layout will be similar to last year, but with some significant innovative changes to improve and better utilize certain areas. You can also expect some jib features to be popping up in the Green Park, shortly after the hill opens on November 22, 2008.

It’s going to be good!
