You can stop crossing off your calendar, the dark days of pedalling for your turns are over! This Friday, June 22, the Sunburst chairlift is firing up for that most glorious of days: the opening of the Sun Peaks Bike Park.
We’re checking in to give you a trail update for opening weekend, but first off, we want to give a big shout out to our Trail Crew. After a warm and sunny start to the pre-season lulled us into forgetting about BC’s fickle spring weather, the switch flipped to a stretch of classic ‘Juneuary’ conditions- complete with heavy rain, cooler temperatures, and even a touch of snow. The crew battled through it all and because of their hard work there will be plenty of options open for your riding pleasure this weekend. If you see ‘em out on a bike enjoying the fruits of their labour be sure to throw plenty of high fives (and maybe a cold beer or two..) their way to say thanks.
The majority of the Bike Park is in great shape and ready to go for Friday, however, due to weather and spring runoff there are, as usual, a few trails that will be no-goes for kick off. For starters, a combination of high winds and a heavy snow year wreaked a bit of havoc on Sugar this winter, with fallen trees knocking out several bridges. The trail will be partially open, from the top down to where it crosses the ski run Homesteader. The rest is closed until the crew has a chance to finish their repairs. In better news, Sugar’s partner in crime Sweet One is good to go for opening!
Gummy Bear is still drying out fully, but thanks to some last minute snow removal from the crew it will be ready to rip, joining Mach and Barn Burner on the open list.
Behind Bars still needs a bit of time, as do our lift-access cross country trails Altitude and Big Rock Ride, so all three of these trails will be closed for the time being. Zazel Track is also temporarily off limits due to the construction of the new top-to-bottom green trail in that area.
Finally, the top of Steam Shovel (formerly Ain’t No Scrubs) is undergoing some remodelling so it’s also closed, but the bottom of the trail (the original Steam Shovel) will be open. Other than that, everything else is open and ready to shred!
We're confident on these trail openings, but with mountain weather there’s a slight chance things could change before the big day, so as always you can check our Lift and Trail Status page for the most up to date trail conditions.
If you’re heading up here this weekend don’t forget about our Lift and a Lager event on Saturday, where your lift ticket/season pass includes a refreshing beverage on the sunny patio of our mid-mountain Sunburst Lodge. Also, keep an eye out on our Instagram over the next few days for a little bit of fun we have planned featuring a certain Mr Dylan Sherrard and some sweet prizes…
We’re stoked for Friday. See you on the trails!
