Nancy Greene Raine explains the contest and project entry to Jeff & Bill from Radio NL Kamloops morning show. Listen now.

Representatives from the Sun Peaks Alpine Club, Sun Peaks Freestyle Club, and the community at large, backed by Sun Peaks Resort, created a group called Sun Peaks Snow Savers. They entered the competition with the skier/boarder cross course project on Sundance Mountain.

This course is built of snow every season, a massive undertaking of resources and snowmaking. The course usually opens in January, in time for the annual TELUS Nancy Greene Alpine Classic and is open to the public. The pitch of the entry is that the community, in partnership with Sun Peaks Resort, would build a permanent skier/boarder cross course out of dirt, saving millions in snowmaking water and providing local athletes proper access to a new snow sport discipline. It would open training opportunities and hosting of competitions, effectively showcasing Sun Peaks to the world in a new way.

What is Mackenzie Top Peak?

Mackenzie Top Peak is a national competition to crown Canada’s Most Invested Ski Community. Canadians and support organizations representing a snow sport discipline are encouraged to enter.

This year’s entry requirement was a project with a sustainability aspect. Sun Peaks successfully made it to the Top 10 after the rallying phase in January, which called for entries to garner as many nominations as possible. The Top 10 voting round will end on March 3, with the Top 3 announced on March 4. From there, it’s in the hands of the judges! They will award the $100,000 Grand Prize along with $20,000 to second place and $10,000 to third place. The grand prize would completely cover the cost of the skier/boarder cross course in Sun Peaks.

The prize awards will be announced live on CBC Sports on March 9.

On behalf of the Sun Peaks Alpine Club, Sun Peaks Freestyle Club, and the Sun Peaks community, thank you for your support and voting!
