5 Reasons to Nordic Ski in Sun Peaks this Winter

Winter is here in the mountains! The snow is flying and our Nordic network of groomed and track set trails is now fully open for the 2018/19 season. The trails are already in great shape and have been providing plenty of smiles for Nordic enthusiasts as they glide through our winter wonderland.

If you’ve never visited Sun Peaks or it’s been awhile, here are five reasons to grab your skinny skis (or rent a pair here!) and head on up:

Groomed Nordic Trails in Sun Peaks

Daily Grooming

Just like with our alpine trails, we take grooming seriously here in Sun Peaks. Most of our 37 km of primary Nordic trails are groomed and track set daily (we also have 17 km of ungroomed backcountry trails), providing an impeccable skiing surface. Whether skate or classic is your thing, our grooming ensures an enjoyable day on the trails.

View of Mt Tod from the Nordic Trails in Sun Peaks

The Views

There’s just something about those mountain views! Whether it’s the majesty of Mt. Tod towering over the village or the beauty of a frozen McGillivray Lake, breathtaking vistas are waiting around every corner. Revel in the spellbinding quiet of the forest after a fresh snowfall or enjoy the endless horizons of a clear mid-winter’s day.

Lift Access Nordic Skiing at Sun Peaks Resort

Lift Access

Looking for something new in your Nordic experiences? Here in Sun Peaks your Nordic day ticket includes two rides up the Morrisey Express chairlift to discover the lift-access Holy Cow trail. Experience skiing on top of a mountain as you work your way into a long, winding decent deeper into the network.

Nordic Skiing with Dog at Sun Peaks Resort

You can bring your four-legged friend!

Think skiing in Sun Peaks means leaving your furry companion behind? Not to worry! We have a selection of dog friendly trails you can ski with your pooch, which you can combine into an 8 km loop from the village to McGillivray Lake. The designated dog trails are a mix of on and off leash, so please leash your four-legged friend in the applicable areas.

Sun Peaks Nordic Festival

Dedicated Nordic Facilities and Events

Our dedicated Nordic facilities will help you enjoy your ski day to the fullest. Sun Peaks Nordic skiers appreciate the convenience of a large, free parking area (P5) just steps from the main trailhead. Adjacent to P5 is the Sun Peaks Nordic Centre, a one stop shop for all your Nordic needs, including equipment rentals, retail sales, ticket sales and general information.

Right beside the Nordic Centre is the Umbrella Café for a quick snack or beverage. Once you're out on the trails, the cabin at the McGillivray Lake Outpost is the perfect spot to stop with your own mid-ski snack and for a bathroom break. Après ski activities await at one of the many bars and restaurants in the village.

The Nordic community in Sun Peaks loves hosting events and clinics to help welcome newcomers to the trails. Held in March, the annual Sun Peaks Nordic Festival is a two day celebration of all things cross country, with a healthy dose of racing thrown in.

New to the sport? Glenn Bond Nordic Ski Camps run twice a winter, December 8 to 9 and January 5 to 6, to help take your Nordic to the next level.
