Avalanche Awareness & Snow Safety Day
People digging in the snow.

Sun Peaks Beacon Basin is a dedicated area designed to help participants freshen up their avalanche companion rescue skills before heading out into the backcountry. It's located at the top of the Sunburst Express Chairlift and is free to use (lift ticket required).

This area has eight buried beacons (donated by Sun Peaks Mountain Rescue Society) that guests can practice locating using a transceiver and probe. Different beacons, or combination of beacons can be activated from the patrol panel, so there are various versions of the course you can practice with.

If you have any questions, our Ski Patrol team is fully trained and can provide you with any answers you may need.

Get familiar with the risks of backcountry as well as the best practices for your safety.
