Chairlift Safety

It's important to remember that our lifts are heavy machinery. For the safety of our guests and staff, we ask you to follow our tips for loading, riding, and unloading all chairlifts at Sun Peaks Resort and have a safe lift ride.

Load Bike Sign

  • Organize your group before loading.
  • Ask for help if required.
  • Wait for a bike carrier.
  • Lift the front tire into the tray.
  • Walk forward while loading.
  • Push your bike until it’s seated in the wheel well.
  • Follow your bike to the red load line.

WHEN LOADING THE CHAIR

  • Follow your bike around to the red line.
  • Get prepared and be ready. Check for loose clothing and equipment. Remove backpacks.
  • If you're loading with kids, you may need to help pull them up onto the chair.
  • Look behind for the approaching chair.
  • Sit down and lift your feet.
  • Lower the safety bar.

WHEN RIDING THE CHAIR

  • Put the safety bar down as soon as everyone is seated.
  • For your safety and the safety of others do not horse around, throw things off the chair, or swing/bounce the chair.
  • If you're getting things out of your pocket use caution. It is easy to drop your personal items on riders below.
  • No smoking or vaping on chairs.
  • Leave the bar down until you see the 'raise restraining device' sign.
  • Sit back against the backrest while in motion.
  • Watch for and follow the signs/instructions.

WHEN UNLOADING THE CHAIR

  • When coming into the terminal, lift the safety bar at the “raise bar here” sign.
  • Check for loose equipment and clothing, and ensure that none of your gear is caught in the chair.
  • At the red line walk off the chair.
  • Collect your bike and ride your bike down the ramp.
  • If you happen to leave something behind, move out of the way as soon as possible. Our lift operators will assist you.

  • Check for loose clothing and equipment. Remove backpacks.
  • When instructed, walk up to the red line.
  • Look behind for the approaching chair.
  • If you're loading with kids, you may need to help pull them up onto the chair.
  • Sit down, sit back and lift your feet.
  • Lower the safety bar, and enjoy the ride. Let the other riders on the chair know that you're lowering the bar to avoid a head collision.

WHEN RIDING THE CHAIR

  • Put the safety bar down as soon as everyone is seated.
  • For your safety and the safety of others do not horse around, throw things off the chair, or swing/bounce the chair.
  • If you're getting things out of your pocket use caution. It is easy to drop your personal items on riders below.

Guests are not permitted to bike/ride with an infant in a backpack or baby carrier of any type. 

Please note animals are not permitted on chairlifts. If you have a service dog, please contact Guest Services by phone 250.578.5474 or email guestservices@sunpeaksresort.com and we will provide alternative transport option for you and your service dog.
