Supporting Mountain Life in Sun Peaks This Fall

A first adventure on the trails, a new skill on the snow or a glimpse of wildlife can make time in Sun Peaks memorable. For some, the mountain is a place to discover what’s possible with the right support. For others, it’s where a lifelong passion takes shape. And for the wildlife around us, it’s home.

Each of these local non-profits supports a different side of mountain life: making outdoor recreation more accessible, helping young athletes build skills and confidence, and encouraging us to care for the wildlife that shares this special place. Through dedicated volunteers, skilled instructors and community education, their work reaches across the slopes, trails and neighbourhoods of Sun Peaks. This Giving Tuesd-eh, discover how your support can help them create more opportunities for mountain adventure and care for the place we all love.

What is Giving Tuesd-eh in Sun Peaks?

Giving Tuesd-eh celebrates giving close to home, with a Canadian “eh” and a focus on the organizations supporting our Sun Peaks community. This Thanksgiving, it’s an opportunity to turn gratitude for mountain life into support for the people who help care for it.

Supporting the Mountain Experiences We Love

In the second instalment of our Giving Tuesd-eh spotlight series, meet Adaptive Sports Sun Peaks, Sun Peaks Freestyle Club and Sun Peaks Bear Aware Society.

Their work takes different forms, from instructor training and accessible equipment to youth coaching and wildlife education. Each helps people enjoy the mountains with greater confidence, care and connection. Here’s how past donations have made a difference and what you can support through Giving Tuesd-eh 2026.

Adaptive Sports at Sun Peaks

Creating More Opportunities for Mountain Adventure

Enjoying the mountains can mean different things to different people. Adaptive Sports at Sun Peaks (ASSP) creates accessible outdoor adventures for individuals living with disabilities, helping more people experience the snow and trails with the support of dedicated volunteer instructors.

Donations from Giving Tuesd-eh 2025 helped ASSP purchase headsets to improve communication between instructors and students across its programs. The organization also purchased roll bars for its adaptive mountain bikes, adding safety equipment for students exploring the trails.

This year, ASSP is raising funds to support its instructors’ ongoing training and development. Continued learning helps volunteers build their skills, stay engaged and deliver safe, supportive experiences for students.

Looking ahead to 2027, ASSP also hopes to continue growing its summer adaptive mountain biking programs. Instructor training, new equipment and ongoing bike maintenance will help keep these adventures accessible and enjoyable for participants.

How you can help: Your donation will support instructor development and help ASSP continue providing accessible outdoor experiences for individuals living with disabilities.

Sun Peaks Freestyle Club

Helping Young Athletes Build Skills and Confidence

For young skiers and snowboarders, learning a new skill takes practice, encouragement and a supportive place to progress. Sun Peaks Freestyle Club helps local athletes develop through high-level coaching and training that puts safety and confidence at the centre of the experience.

Giving Tuesd-eh 2025 donations supported athletes and coaching staff, helping the club provide specialized training, reduce financial barriers and retain skilled coaches. That support helps keep local freestyle sports accessible while giving young people opportunities to challenge themselves and grow.

The club’s next goal takes that learning off the snow. Its current fundraising target is $60,000 to purchase an Olympic-grade trampoline and establish a dedicated off-season training program.

The trampoline would allow skiers and snowboarders to practise aerial manoeuvres, spatial awareness and body mechanics in a controlled training environment. It would also create a new off-snow recreation opportunity within the community, extending opportunities for athletic development beyond winter.

How you can help: Your donation will bring the club closer to its trampoline fundraising goal and help create a year-round training resource for local athletes.

Sun Peaks Bear Aware Society

Caring for the Wildlife That Shares Our Mountain Home

Living in and visiting bear country comes with a shared responsibility to care for wildlife. Sun Peaks Bear Aware Society helps residents, visitors and local employees understand bear safety and manage attractants, supporting responsible coexistence throughout the community.

Giving Tuesd-eh 2025 funds supported educational materials, interactive displays, volunteer training and online bear-sighting reporting tools. Over the past year, the society delivered presentations to local school and early learning students, ArtZone summer campers and resort employees. Market Day outreach and neighbourhood visits brought that education to residents and visitors, too.

This year’s fundraising has a particularly personal focus: two orphaned Sun Peaks black bear cubs, Hollandaise and Bernaise. Their mother was killed following human-wildlife conflict associated with human attractants, and the cubs are now being cared for by Northern Lights Wildlife Society in Smithers, BC.

Donations will help support their care through winter hibernation and preparation for a planned return to their native region in spring 2027. Their story also offers an opportunity to explain how managing attractants can help prevent wildlife conflict.

The society is also raising funds for its first website, creating a place to share educational resources, local information and updates on the cubs’ progress.

How you can help: Your donation can support Hollandaise and Bernaise’s care and rehabilitation, alongside the society’s work to build awareness and protect local wildlife.
