Nordic skier on trail

Learning a new sport can be intimidating, but Sun Peaks has made it easy for beginners to take up cross-country skiing (also known as Nordic skiing). Offering rentals, lessons, a well-defined trail network, and more takes the guessing game out of it so that you can enjoy more time on skinny skis. Read on for some tips specifically for new cross-country skiers in Sun Peaks.

Get Equipped with Rentals

Nordic Rentals

Nordic skiing requires a set of equipment that is unique and different than downhill ski gear. With a fully equipped rental shop in the Sun Peaks Nordic Centre, along with cross-country rental offerings in the village, you’ll be able to get properly kitted out with skis, boots, and poles. Rentals are a great opportunity to try the activity out first without investing in brand new gear.  You will first need to decide what type of cross country skiing you would like to try. Classic skiing is often easier for beginners while skate skiing can be more physically and technically demanding.

Layer Up

Layers

Nordic skiing is a very physical activity, and it’s easy to get warm quickly so wearing your downhill gear is not recommended. Wearing multiple, lightweight, layers of clothing is key in order to not overheat while out on the trails. Sun Peaks has several clothing shops in their pedestrian-only village if you need to pick up some new layers before heading out.
