Air Quality Update: Clear Skies In Sun Peaks

Sun Peaks has been enjoying mainly clear skies since Tuesday, August 11, with greatly improved air quality through last week. Sun Peaks Resort remains open and welcoming, with plenty of accommodation available across various lodging providers and activity operations running as normal.

There are currently no active wildfires in close proximity to Sun Peaks or the immediate surrounding communities, and there are no travel restrictions impacting travel to Sun Peaks. While a State of Provincial Emergency remains in effect due to wildfire activity elsewhere in British Columbia, it is not currently impacting Sun Peaks or access to the resort. The State of Provincial Emergency is a legal tool that allows the provincial government to access additional powers when they are needed to respond to an emergency.

We’re thinking of the communities across the province affected by wildfires and are grateful to everyone working to keep communities in BC safe.

During these times, we remind everyone to be vigilant and prepared. If you see evidence of a wildfire, report it immediately to BC Wildfire Service by calling 1.800.663.5555 or *5555 from a cellphone as soon as possible. A campfire ban remains in effect and recreational off-road vehicles are now prohibited on Crown land in our region.

The health and safety of our guests, employees and community remains our highest priority. When smoky skies are present, Sun Peaks Resort operations make regular assessments of air quality throughout the day and may alter operations if conditions warrant it.

Before you head outdoors

Air quality affects everyone differently. Children, older adults, individuals who are pregnant, and those with heart or lung conditions may be more sensitive to wildfire smoke.

We encourage guests to:

  • Review current air quality conditions before participating in outdoor activities
  • Reduce or modify strenuous outdoor activity if smoke causes discomfort or breathing difficulties
  • Stay hydrated and take breaks indoors as needed
  • Follow current public health guidance if you have underlying health conditions
  • Listen to your body and adjust your plans if needed

Operational decisions are based on a combination of current air quality, visibility, weather forecasts, on-mountain observations, and guidance from health and safety authorities. Conditions can change quickly, and updates will be provided if resort operations are affected.

Planning Outdoor Activities

Whether you're visiting for mountain biking, sightseeing, hiking, golf, or other outdoor recreation, we encourage you to review current air quality conditions before heading outside. Smoke can affect individuals differently, particularly during prolonged or strenuous activity. Consider reducing the intensity or duration of your activity if you experience discomfort and follow current public health guidance if you have underlying health conditions.
